Our local communities power us. By drawing upon the best local talent, we provide our global clients with award-winning communications whilst positively contributing to society and enabling opportunities for the next generation.

In order to continue supporting our local educational networks, TMC provides bespoke, career-focused work experience to students.

During June, we welcomed April and Sophie for a week internship to help provide insight on their next steps. Alongside time spent with #FutureVision and the wider team, they were provided with a wealth of activities, discussions, and sessions to bring them closer to life inside a communications agency.

#FutureVision

“My name is April Clark, I am in my first year of Sixth Form at Eaton Bank Academy – currently I am studying Media Studies, English Literature, and Drama. My favourite subject is Media and I hope to pursue a future in the industry.

I know my passions lie within the creative industry as I enjoy creating short films and music videos in my spare time. However, I was unsure whether it was design, editing, or marketing that I see my future in. Thankfully I have had a fantastic opportunity to spend a week with the TMC team who have helped guide and inspire my ambitions!

I entered the #FutureVision competition praying I was in with a chance of experiencing the reality of working in an agency. Amazingly I won! I was eager to see all of the different departments within TMC and hoped the brilliant team could give me an insight into the field of work I’m pursuing.”

A warm welcome

“Just my luck… I had an appointment first thing on the Monday morning that couldn’t be changed. I was already feeling the anticipation, and nerves creeping over my conscience as I knew I would be missing a morning of activities. Yet I had no need to worry. The team were more than understanding and moved activities around in order to accommodate my needs. I was greeted with a warm welcome, offered a drink, and given a tour of the office. The atmosphere was electric! All my previous woes had vanished, and I couldn’t wait to begin the week which had been planned.

My favourite part of the first day was meeting the team. They’re all so lovely and are clearly passionate about their career! Each explained their ‘Journey’ to TMC and assured me that ‘failure is part of the journey’. It was insightful finding out about different schemes and apprenticeships that could lead to employment within the industry.”

How has your internship at TMC helped you develop your skills to prepare you for employment?

“I attended a CV workshop where I learned how to write an effective CV that is ‘tailored to the job and will focus on you’. TMC’s constructive advice helped me to transform my CV into a powerful showcase of my skills and previous achievements. I was also given recommendations on how to make my own CV more original and concise.

In addition to this, the team also introduced me to different types of software which will make me stand out to employers. I used Google Forms to create a questionnaire, and Google Bard which is a new piece of AI used to improve writing – it’s incredible how AI is advancing! Being taught how to compose a professional e-mail was also valuable advice I will take forward into the working world.

One of my favourite activities was the values exercise – three rows of three dots on a piece of paper. I was tasked with joining all the dots with only three lines! I won’t lie it did take a while for me to figure out how to do it; however, this simple brain teaser taught me resilience and to quite literally ‘think outside the box’.”

Which department interested you most?

“All of the departments at TMC have elements of the job that interest me! Nevertheless, I would say the introduction to videography during the film workshop fascinated me the most. The gimble used to keep the camera steady was very heavy… I was scared I’d drop the camera! I never knew how complex and time-consuming colour grading is. I thought it was just a matter of adjusting the overall colours of a video, but I learned that each individual clip needs to be adjusted separately. Using software, such as Capcut, to create a coherent video demonstrated the attention to detail that is required in this industry. Editing the clips we filmed has been one of my favourite tasks so far.

Moreover, learning how to create cohesive transitions will hopefully improve my TikTok game! The process has opened a new outlook on creating video content – it should aid me in creating my music video for my Media Studies coursework, as it has taught me to be innovative whilst producing quality content. The team at TMC have convinced me this is the industry I want to be in!”

An end to the week

“My week at TMC will be one to cherish – I have learned some invaluable skills that will set me on a course destined for success. Thanks to the brilliant team who created a week full of activities and experiences I was able to make the most of my time in the agency.

The workshops were informative, and gripping, and made me feel I was a part of their community. At all times during my experience, there was a comforting and positive atmosphere ensuring I was enjoying myself.

I would highly recommend TMC to anyone seeking work experience – I had a busy schedule and they provided me with the insight I need to put my foot in the door of a creative industry. Throughout this past week, I have developed a desire to pursue editing and videography; The team have shown me that is possible to follow your passion and find a career that suits you!”
