After years of virtual events, webinars, and online networking following the Covid pandemic, the exhibition and events industry is experiencing a powerful resurgence.

Research from UFI Global Exhibition Industry Statistics showed that the number of exhibitions held worldwide in 2024 matched pre-pandemic levels; a clear sign that face-to-face meetings are not only back, but thriving.

The report estimated that 32,000 exhibitions were held last year, with 4.7 million exhibiting companies welcoming 318 million visitors. As businesses across many industries look to reconnect and rebuild their communities, in-person events are proving to be irreplaceable.

The Value of Interpersonal Relationships in a Digital World

The digital world has transformed how we communicate, particularly with the exponential rise of AI within our day-to-day functions. But, our fundamental need for human connection has in no way diminished.

Business relationships and collaborations still depend on trust, empathy and authentic interaction, all of which benefit from face-to-face settings. Key interactions such as body language, tone of voice and facial expressions all contribute to an experience that digital platforms struggle to replicate.

Linked to this, we have seen a rise in digital mistrust. We are wary as digital consumers. Polished, overly perfected ‘human’ content can often signpost the use of creative ‘gap-filling’, i.e. the fingerprints of Google Veo, Midjourney or Adobe Firefly. The more mistrust we have with what ‘appears’ to be human online, the more we crave tangible, physical in-person experiences.

Physical vs. Digital: The Power of Presence

Whilst digital events and communications certainly have their place in the commercial ecosystem, offering convenience and accessibility, they lack the engagement of in-person gatherings.

Challenges such as poor internet connection, accidental interruptions, sound issues, lack of technical knowledge or other distractions are avoided, and attendees are able to interact on a deeper, more personal level. In-person networking is unfiltered, retaining the stammers, false starts, infectious laughter and the kaleidoscope of other emotions we can’t contain. The imperfect that makes us perfect.

At in-person meetings, delegates are free to explore the space and network; either in groups or on a one-to-one basis. These interpersonal moments often create more meaningful business opportunities than months of written email chains or video calls. They also foster spontaneous exchanges of scientific knowledge, insights that might never emerge in more structured or digital formats. Digital can absolutely support these experiences, but it rarely replaces them.

This is particularly true in sectors such as healthcare, where the demonstration of physical products and technologies, and hands-on experiences or Q&A forums, are vital to upskilling and educating.

For example, showcasing new diagnostic tools or surgical devices on-screen is compelling, but is not quite the same as being in the same room as the device. Professionals want to see, touch, and interact with the technology, and be able to ask questions in real-time.

Co-Ordinating In-Person Events

Throughout the years, the team at TMC has partnered extensively with healthcare organisations and medical societies across Europe.

Our experience within these industries corroborate with the view that people are increasingly looking for that human-to-human connection and are wanting to experience in-person events.  Congresses, courses and annual meetings are seeing record numbers of delegates, which TMC are proud to encourage through our strategic communications and promotional support.

How Events Can Prioritise In-Person Connection

Over time, events have evolved and priorities have changed. Whether it’s the way of presenting information, the types of event space used, the activities available and more. This evolution is necessary in order to stay relevant and impactful.

With this new appetite for in-person meetings, networking opportunities have become more and more important to allow people to connect. As a result, dedicated networking areas and informal break-out spaces are becoming an essential feature of newer events. These can manifest in the form of social mixers, lush lounges and member spaces, designed to increase connection – even if just over a quick drink, or between sessions.

Additionally, there have been improvements for accessibility; with wellbeing rooms and quiet zones available for attendees to take a break from the sometimes overstimulating concourse. Catering to neurodiversity is a theme that we have seen put into the spotlight – quite rightly. This, along with hearing loops, physical layouts adapted and even lighting choice, couldn’t be more welcome.

The Future of In-Person Events

As digital technology continues to evolve, it’s clear that the future of communication will remain hybrid. Digital tools can enhance reach, accessibility, and efficiency; however they perform better when they complement, rather than replace, physical experiences.

In an age of automation and AI, the most impactful moments still happen face-to-face, with a handshake, a shared insight, or an idea sparked over coffee.
