As part of our #FutureVision programme, we were delighted to welcome Phoebe into the TMC Head Office for two days of work experience at the beginning of April.
Here she shares her thoughts on experiencing first-hand what it’s like to work in a digital marketing agency.
#FutureVision
“My name is Phoebe, I am currently in my last year at Congleton High Sixth Form. I am studying Psychology, Sociology and PE and wishing to further extend my knowledge in the Marketing area.
I reached out to TMC to gain a better understanding and insight into marketing through work experience.
On my first day I was greeted with a warm welcome from the team, my own laptop to use during my time in the office and a timed schedule with my two days here planned out.”
An Introduction to Marketing
“My first sit-down session of the day was with Marketing.
The team gave me insight into different marketing processes, such as attaining an audience through profiling, to publishing work and building a communications plan. They also shared and recommended several tools to aid my learning, and help me progress further.
In the afternoon I had the opportunity to sit and listen in to a filmed interview with the Marketing team about their thoughts and knowledge surrounding the topic ‘Organic Search Vs Paid Search‘. It was a great experience, giving me an insight into how everything works behind the scenes, and how the team make their social media posts.
It also sparked an interest into filming!”
Understanding Social Impact
“On my second day of work experience, I had several meetings scheduled with different teams across TMC. This included a sit-down with the Social Impact team.
Here I learnt more about what is involved when working in Social Impact, such as having clients with an audience age ranging from primary school aged up to adults, and how work can vary from looking after client websites to organising full campaigns.
Having creativity is important here, as you have to think about the audience you are targeting.”
Implementing Business Values Exercise
“I also completed a values exercise, using creativity and problem solving to work through each section. This encompassed the SIT model, and had us discussing areas of marketing such as curation, collaboration and content. This exercise looks at priorities and helps to define purpose and direction with work.
The skills used here were also evident when speaking to the Digital team (an area where problem solving is key!) showing how skills can translate across different areas of work.”
Creative Design
“During my work experience, I was given a creative task from the Studio team where I had to design a post for ‘International Colours Day’. This allowed me to be creative while also learning how to use tools such as Canva to develop my skillset. This helped to expand on my interest in design.”
“Overall, having the opportunity to undertake work experience at TMC enabled me to have a quick insight into what each area of a marketing agency does in their day-to-day work. This will really help me with my future career decisions.”
