Everybody’s career paths are different.

Our team at TMC is a prime example of that. We are made up of an ever-eclectic mix of personalities, backgrounds and experience

From our graduate recruits, through to Directors and Senior Team members – this diverse mix contributes endlessly to successfully delivering our award-winning work.

In the evolving world of marketing and strategic communications it’s rare to find a completely linear route to industry. If we think about the emergence of jobs in Social Media alone as an example; these simply didn’t exist 20 years or so ago. Predominantly due to the fact that Social Media platforms hadn’t been established in the way they are now at that point!

With that in mind, what paths did our team take to their chosen career within a creative marketing industry?

Terri Lowe – Senior Marketing Manager

What are your key skills in this role?

The key skills that you need to be a marketeer in 2023 are being authentic, being able to communicate, and being able to ask why. Because if you don’t understand the why of what you’re doing, you’re never going to succeed on delivering the brief.

What’s your favourite type of project at TMC?

I love anything where you dig into the real emotional drivers of the audience, where you create an audience persona – which is fundamental to any marketing task. You’ve got understand who you’re talking to and why, so anything where we are talking directly to a customer, an audience member – and delivering on that.

Matt Fulham – Junior Designer

When did you decide your career path?

I went to school and I did graphic design as an option, and I really enjoyed doing that. Then I wasn’t very academic as I saw myself as more of a creative person. So then I did graphic design at university.

Your favourite type of project at TMC?

My favourite project would be typesetting for documents and proposals. I like typography and exploring how it works on the page.

Francesca Garnsey – Account Director

When did you decide your career path?

So I don’t know if I ever knew I wanted to be an Account Director. I started here as an Account Executive and that was after I went back to university and studied marketing, so I needed a way to get into the industry, and Account Executive was perfect for my kind of route into marketing. Since I’ve been here, I’ve obviously found a job in a company that I absolutely love – I’ve been given so many opportunities to progress in the role, and so now, I’m an Account Director.

What qualifications do you have?

I have a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and a masters in Marketing.

Your key skills in this role?

The key skills, I would say are being organised, and being able to multi-task. On any one day, I can be on multiple projects with multiple clients and team members, and I need everybody moving in the right direction to meet our deadlines, so being organised, being able to communicate with whoever it might be in the right way is really really important.

Harvey Marshall – Videographer

What are your key skills within this role?

Attention to detail, for sure. You’ve got to have a keen eye for composition and how things look, and just general aesthetics. Then just creativity and willing to try stuff that’s a bit different, and always trying to think outside the box.

What are your favourite types of project at TMC?

Probably the social videos – that short turn around, quick and snappy type, going from one to the next and keeping the energy up – those are the good ones to do.

Julia Teagle – Account Executive

Did anybody inspire your career path?

So everyone in my family is in science based roles, so science teachers, one person is training to become a doctor, my sisters are into physics – so I’ve always been around science. I wasn’t very good at science at school, but it seemed weird to go into a job that was completely unrelated to it, so the fact that in my job now I can work in lots of STEM projects. Encouraging people to get into STEM, or expanding on companies STEM specialities – I am still related to the topic, without having to actually know to many specialist skills.

What are your key skills in this role?

We do work on a really wide range of projects, so having a lot of skills is important, and it’s good to just be brave and be ready to try a new things. In particular, I use a lot of data analysing, and really like learning to understand data and tell a story from what the numbers are saying. Also, understanding impact businesses can have on the environment and social spaces.

Anthony McNally – Art Director

When did you decide your career path?

I left school not really knowing what I wanted to do. Here, I went for an initial discussion at a small independent college. I met the design tutor there, and having a conversation with David, that was the moment where I thought this is something I am interested in.

What qualifications do you have?

I did a simple, one year BTECH, and then that led to me getting a three year apprenticeship placement at a printing company.

A piece of advice for those starting their career paths.

A piece of advice I would give is, you don’t need to go to university. Apprenticeships are a great way to get hands on experience. Three years in, you’re quite well rounded with the software and also the speed of the industry. It’s quite different to learning anything in education. There’s also so much free resource, so much free tutorials, free softwares – download trials, try things, create things, and just start making things.
