Inspire Virtual Environment
Creating an immersive environment that provides support and encouragement, enabling ICE to attract more young people into civil engineering careers. Sharing existing information in a more interactive and engaging format that can be continually updated.
ICE is a professional membership body supporting 95,000 civil engineers worldwide. ICE have a remit to promote civil engineering as a profession by using STEM education outreach programmes.
Insightful case studies, project information and helpful career advice are already available for young people via the ICE website. Our brief was to find a new method of sharing this information by creating a new interactive hub and immersive environment for younger people (primarily students aged 14-16, ambassadors and educators) to showcase the existing content in a more engaging format that would inspire them to pursue civil engineering careers.
The Solution
TMC designed and developed an innovative platform; ICE Inspire, that offers engaging user experiences, whilst ensuring that it remains accessible and inclusive for everyone. Our team worked collaboratively with ICE to build a virtual environment that shares informative yet engaging and inspiring content that helps to promote civil engineering as a career path.
A first for ICE, this virtual environment provides young people with the relevant tools and information required to pursue a future within civil engineering. The content takes various formats, such as videos, interviews and written articles. The environment can be continually developed, providing the means to constantly update and include new content.
ICE Inspire Mimics the Real World
The platform, ICE Inspire, provides students with various opportunities to learn about and see the diversity of people within civil engineering roles. The diversity of people showcased within the environment allows the students to see relatable people working within engineering careers that they themselves might want to pursue.
The immersive environment provides the opportunity to:
- Meet engineers and learn about their careers.
- Read case studies and discover civil engineering projects in the Gallery.
- Visit the Cinema to watch videos about civil engineering and the people.
- Explore the careers centre for age-specific information and advice.
Each area has been developed in a way that users can walk through and interact with items within the rooms, as shown below.

Inspiring the Next Generation
Whilst primarily designed as a recruitment tool, the virtual environment also supports the hundreds of school teams taking part in the inaugural ICE David Butler Competition. Competitors will be able to use the platform to research different areas of civil engineering to help with the tasks, which include decision-making and creating a development plan for their local area.
